The PA State Farm Show sheep to shawl competition was held on January 9th, and once again, "Carl and the Not So Lazy Kates" did quite well. Although the judges placed our team third out of seven teams, our shawl took TOP price at the auction, selling for a whopping $1350. Our shearer, Carl Geissinger, also won the "Shearer's Award" for his fine workmanship, so we were very excited about that as well. All in all, we had a good day. Our 15 year old team member, Katie Watson, participated in the Youth Fleece to Shawl competition that was held at 10 a.m. the same day - the "Fort Freeland Flickers", as they called themselves, was the only team to take part in this first time ever event, but worked very hard to produce a lovely shawl that sold for $500 at the auction that evening! Congrats to these hard working and dedicated kids! Marni Micek from Harrisburg, PA covered the entire competition LIVE on her blog - a full play by play account plus pictures can be viewed on her website: http://accidentalknitter.blogspot.com Take a look - she took some terrific photos!
The new class schedule is now posted on the "Classes and Workshops" page - I have scheduled quite a few classes on Saturdays, which should accommodate more people than holding classes on weekdays. The schedule includes some old favorites (both sock classes) and some new ones (Leaf Lace scarf; Cables, Baubles, and Buttonholes). The shop looked fairly sparse after the holidays, so after I finished up my inventory, I began re-ordering new items, including books from Interweave Press and Storey Publishing, knitting needles and accessories from Skacel and Yarn Craft, and yarns from Brown Sheep, Kraemer, Classic Elite AND Lonesome Stone Fiber of Colorado - new sock yarns will be arriving from LTF as well as their beautiful variegated superwash worsted weight merino yarn called "Sheepish Edition" that will (sorry ) knock your socks off! The weekly knitting night group has started up again - Thursday January 17th is our first get together, and will continue every Thursday evening until we all say "Whoa"! Again, there are two "shifts" - one from about 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., and the second from around 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.
He is quite personable, halter trained, and has been shown, so he is used to being handled and has already taken to greeting me in the barn every morning with a quick "snarffle" to my face! This intelligent, noble creature is a pleasure to have around, and his gorgeous fiber will be an added bonus. So stop in at Mad About Ewes and see what's new!
